Overview of Mindfulness and Seeking Safety Sections

FFCA will introduce support skills, add new skills, knowledge, and techniques to use engaging families, parents, children and a niche on mindfulness working with fathers. Mindfulness training is one segment of a 15-hour in the Fathers and Families Coalition of America’s Advanced Practitioner Credential.

"The application of mindfulness can offer families, parents, children, and practitioners the opportunity to move from reacting to their experiences to responding, thereby aiding in emotional regulation. Individuals can create change in thinking and behavior by decreasing the activation of the stress response. Family therapists who are mindful can increase objectivity and are less likely to act upon negative countertransference. This training will provide skill development, experiential activities and start the journey for those in the Advanced Practitioner Credential, Fatherhood Life Coaching Certificate to gain an additional discus four-step MAC Mindfulness Guide of empathic acknowledgment, intentional attention, nonjudgmental acceptance, and action toward change."

Seeking Safety - Part of SAMHSA's National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices is an integrated treatment designed to address the unique relationship between PTSD and substance use in either individual or group settings. This approach centers on five principles philosophies: 1) safety is the highest priority to begin the recovery process and throughout the recovery process, specifically focusing on attaining security in relationships, thinking, behavior, and emotions, 2) integrated treatment of PTSD and substance use concurrently, 3) focus on ideals to counteract loss occurred through PTSD and substance use, 4) addressing four major content areas: cognitive, behavioral, interpersonal, and case management, and 5) attention to the clinical process. The concept of safety is interwoven into each unit, with the idea that security allows for forwarding movement in the trauma recovery process. Safety is defined as discontinuing substance use, eliminating suicidality and suicidal ideation, minimizing exposure to high-risk behavior, letting go of unhealthy relationships (platonic and romantic), gaining control over PTSD symptoms (depression, dissociation, hyperarousal, anger, etc...), and ending self-harming behaviors. Clients learn to both prioritize their safety, in addition to taking responsibility for their safety.
