Personal Statement
Over the past 38 years, Edwin has dedicated his professional life to teaching, practice, and evaluating child welfare and behavioral health programs. As Director of the Office of American Indian Projects (OAIP), Edwin works with a wide variety of American Indian rural and urban communities. Edwin has been Director since 1984, where his duties include curriculum development, grant writing, research, management, providing field liaison to behavioral and child welfare agencies. Currently principal investigator for three grant projects which are diversely funded by the Department of Labor, Children's Bureau, and SAMHSA with a focus on addressing the intersection of child welfare and behavioral health issues that impact American Indian families. Edwin's role as Director of OAIP has allowed him to work on projects that are identified by American Indian communities resulting in the development of the workforce via the recruitment, support, and education of tribal and community members. Enhancing close relationship has developed with tribes in Arizona and contiguous states for the development of field practicum sites. Supervision for these sites has been done with the use of technology to bridge distances and by face-to-face contact.

Currently, Edwin serves as Field Liaison for traineeship sites and advisor to American Indian students. Additionally, Edwin has created several social work courses focused on working with American Indian children, families, and communities. OAIP has developed a training curriculum in partnership with the Inter-Tribal Council of Arizona and the Arizona Department of Economic Security to improve working cross-culturally with American Indian/Alaska Natives. Edwin currently serves on the Native American Connections Board of Directors and the Advisory Committee for the National Child Welfare Workforce Institute. His years of service have also provided him with the time and experience to become thoroughly knowledgeable in the areas of American Indian social work while developing an expertise that is consistently requested by American Indian communities as well as organizations to assist them in a variety of human service areas.
